The Middler is thrilled to present Soon, an exhibition of new work by Josh Minkus, open by appointment from May 24 until July 15th, 2018. A reception and performance will be held on the evening of Thursday, May 24th.
In Soon, Josh Minkus (b. 1985, Elk, California) continues to explore the arbitrarily defined precepts around sculpture, poetry, and text in an expansive, synthesizing practice that blends critical prose with formal and sculptural invention.
The show is built around three texts – each written from the perspective of a different persona constricted by media-fed attentions. Together the texts function like ghosts of past, present, and yet-to-come, even as each of the characters understands themselves to be strictly concerned with tomorrow.
The separate ideologies behind each text are reflected in a virtual theater of opposition that Minkus has correlated to a network of sculptures sprawling through the exhibition.
Works on view include God Is Not Great By Christopher Hitchens (2018), a sprawling, sprout-like arrangement of paper sculptures composed from the 307 pages of Hitchens' 2007 polemic against organized religion, and Hospital (2018), an accumulation of new sub-sculptures by Minkus created from sprue wax and honeycomb cardboard (sourced from Ikea).
Aside from presenting Minkus’s intensely dynamic, improvisatory sculptural forms, this exhibition will also debut a performance by Minkus on the evening of the opening reception. Written for three speakers, the performance brings the text of Soon to life in the living room of The Middler for one night only.
